Darwen train station suspicious packages were not viable threat
TWO controlled explosions were executed at Darwen train station yesterday (August 9), though the suspicious packages were not deemed to be a 'viable threat', police have confirmed.
A man in his 50s remains in custody having been arrested for a public order offence which included comments he made while on board a train.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 3.20pm on Monday 9 August 2021 at Darwen train station, officers arrested a man in his 50s on suspicion of a public order offence following a disturbance on a train.
"Following reports of suspicious items, our bomb disposal unit attended the scene and safely carried out two controlled explosions - however the items were not deemed a viable threat.
"Additional enquiries led to the man being further arrested on suspicion of Terrorism Act offences in connection with comments made whilst aboard the train. He currently remains in custody for questioning.
"Officers from Counter Terrorism Police North West are currently investigating the full circumstances surrounding the incident but are keeping an open mind in regard to any motivations behind the incident."
