USA Joe Biden slams Facebook for Covid19 misinformation
President Joe Biden said Friday that social media misinformation about Covid-19 and vaccinations is âkilling peopleâ and the White House said Facebook needs to clean up its act. âTheyâre killing people. The only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated. And theyâre killing people,â Biden told reporters at the White House, as he left for a weekend at the presidential retreat in Camp David.
âThere is a clear message that is coming through: this is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated,â Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Rochelle Walensky told reporters on Friday. Many of those refusing vaccinations, despite the ease of availability throughout the United States, have said they do not trust the shots.
âMisinformation poses an imminent and insidious threat to our nationâs health,â Dr. Murthy said during remarks at the White House. âWe must confront misinformation as a nation. Lives are depending on it.â
Given the role the internet plays in spreading health misinformation, Murthy said technology companies and social media platforms must make meaningful changes to their products and software to reduce the spread of false information while increasing access to authoritative, fact-based sources.
âWe will not be distracted by accusations which arenât supported by the facts,â Facebook spokesman Kevin McAlister said on Friday. âThe fact is that more than 2 billion people have viewed authoritative information about Covid-19 and vaccines on Facebook, which is more than any other place on the internet. Twitter and YouTube did not respond to requests for comment.
